Backing up your Zashi recovery phrase
What is my recovery phrase?
When you first run Zashi and choose to create a new wallet, your recovery ('seed') phrase is automatically generated. As soon as you receive your first ZEC, you'll be prompted to back up the phrase.
Your recovery phrase controls your funds within Zashi, and is required in order to recover your Zcash if ever your phone is lost or the app uninstalled.
The phrase is a collection of 24 words in a specific order, alongside an optional block height (the wallet birthday). Only you have access to your phrase.
Note! If you do not back up your recovery phrase, you are at risk of losing your ZEC. Funds in Zashi cannot be recovered otherwise, and we do not have access to your phrase and cannot help you recover it.
Where do I find my recovery phrase?
View your phrase at any time: '...' menu > More > Advanced Settings > Zashi Recovery Phrase
How should I store it?
As Gandalf cautioned Frodo, 'Keep it secret, keep it safe.'
Write your phrase down on a piece of paper and store it in a secure location. Anyone with access to the phrase will be able to spend the Zcash in your wallet and view your past and future transaction history.
Do not take a screenshot of your phrase, take a photo of it, or store it digitally. The safest phrase is backed up entirely offline.
You can consider more durable methods of recording your phrase, such as steel backups.
Will anyone from Zashi ever ask for my recovery phrase?
Absolutely not! Anyone asking for your recovery phrase is attempting to scam you, and if the request appears to be from Zashi, they are impersonating us. Anyone with your recovery phrase will have full access to your funds. Please only use our official channels for support, and report anyone requesting your seed phrase.
How do I restore from a recovery phrase?
So long as your recovery phrase is properly recorded, you'll be able to recover all your funds stored in Zashi.
Please see our article on recovering a Zashi wallet.
What happens if I reset Zashi?
Before resetting Zashi for any reason, you must ensure your seed phrase is properly recorded and backed up, as you will need it to restore Zashi and will be unable to access it after resetting.
