Shielding transparent ZEC

If you receive Zcash (ZEC) to your Zodl wallet's transparent address (beginning with `t1...`), Zodl will prompt you to shield your funds.

Shielding moves your ZEC from the transparent pool to the Orchard shielded pool. You can learn more about these in our article 'What is a Zcash pool?'.

Zodl requires that ZEC must be shielded before spending, thereby ensuring your transactions are private.

Shielding

Tap on the 'Shield' button on the prompt you see in your Zodl wallet's main screen.

You see a pop-up with details about shielding. Tap confirm.

Zodl then places an internal transaction to send your transparent funds to your Orchard address. The transaction will need 10 confirmations on the blockchain before becoming spendable.

Privacy considerations

As Zooko says, privacy comes from shielded money at rest. The longer you keep your funds shielded, the greater assurance you have of its privacy.

For example, if you received 1.234 ZEC at your transparent address, then shielded it, and only a short time afterwards, sent 1.234 ZEC to someone's transparent address; that pattern is easily discernible.

Therefore, do not treat shielded Zcash as a temporary pass-through, but rather, the default state of a certain portion of savings.
