Why does my receiving address change?

When you access the Receive screen in Zodl, you'll see a shielded address and a transparent address.

In particular, the shielded address changes whenever you load the Receive screen.

To reassure:

  • All addresses generated by your Zodl wallet belong to the same wallet.
  • These addresses continue to be valid and may be reused if desired.
  • Funds sent to any of them will be received to your wallet.
  • Upon restoring your wallet, funds sent to any address will be recovered.

The reasons for rotating addresses are clear when you consider the privacy implications of providing the same address to multiple services or posting it publicly under different identities. As each address is unique, the same address belongs to the same wallet and thus the same owner. Giving out a new shielded address each time ensures that you are not linked across multiple services for having provided the same address.

Rotating addresses is a familiar concept to those experienced with Bitcoin-like coins, where best practice involves using a fresh address each time; but is a new behavior to those coming from blockchains like Ethereum and Solana in which traditionally only one address belongs to the same wallet account.

This also applies to your Keystone shielded addresses, which also rotate, but all of which belong to the same Keystone wallet.
